BANK OF ENGLAND: £20 AND £50 PAPER BANKNOTES VALID UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30
The Bank of England has issued a notice recalling that banknotes in paper from £20 and £50 will be in circulation and valid until 30 September, after which we can no longer buy goods with them. They will definitely be replaced with polymer banknotes, more difficult to counterfeit.
The legal tender of £20 and £50 banknotes is about to close. Most of the banknotes in that denomination were already replaced a year ago with new ones made of polymers, but there are still more than 300 million single banknotes of £20 and £160 million banknotes of £50 in paper.
The Bank of England has encouraged the public to use old banknotes quickly or deposit them at banks and post offices by the end of the month.
Sarah John, Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, said in June that “the change of our polymer paper banknotes has been a major development, because it makes them more difficult to counterfeit and are more durable“.
