BFI London Film Festival non è solo film, ma anche serie TV. Anche quest’anno l’organizzazione ha riservato uno spazio esclusivo per le nuove serie TV in arrivo, con varie première che lasciano già presagire un ricco programma per gli appassionati. Ecco la lista selezionata dal BFI.
The English
Presto su Amazon Prime, questa miniserie vede protagonisti Emily Blunt e Chaske Spencer. La vicenda narra della fondazione degli Stati Uniti per come oggi li conosciamo, quindi affronta il periodo del vecchio West. In questo contesto una ricca donna inglese Cornelia Locke (Blunt) arriva negli Stati Uniti nel 1890 e grazie ai suoi mezzi economici tenta in ogni modo di uccidere l’uomo responsabile della morte del figlio. Dopo varie peripezie incontra Eli Whipp (Spencer), un soldato congedato dall’esercito che cerca di tornare a casa.
Mammals
James Corden e Sally Hawkins interpretano una coppia sposata, che affronta la vita di coppia con le classiche sfide di chi si impegna a lungo termine. La serie vuole proprio indagare i comportamenti di coppia, l’esclusività del rapporto monogamo e tutto ciò che ne consegue. Il risultato è una commedia drammatica che conquista lo spettatore e lo fa riflettere.
Esterno Notte
Un film, poi diventato serie TV di cui già vi abbiamo parlato. A realizzare quest’opera è stato Marco Bellocchio, regista in grado di trasmettere tutta la drammacità degli eventi storici che hanno sconvolto l’Italia. Divisa in sei puntate, racconta del rapimento e dell’omicidio del leader della Democrazia Cristiana Aldo Moro, avvenuti nel 1978. La serie si concentra sulle responsabilità politiche delle Istituzioni e su ciò che è stato il clima che si respirava in quei tragici giorni. Fabrizio Gifuni interpreta Moro, mentre Toni Servillo presta il volto a Papa Paolo VI.
Señorita 89
Uscita in anteprima solo negli Stati Uniti e in America Latina nel Febbraio 2022. Si tratta di una produzione messicana con protagoniste Ilse Salas, Ximena Romo e Bárbara López. Le vicende si svolgono all’interno di una scuola di perfezionamento, nella quale 32 ragazze cercano di migliorarsi per diventare Miss Messico. Qui le raggiunge una neo-laureata, molto scettica, che ha l’intenzione di svelare ciò che si nasconde dietro questo mondo patinato. Si tratta di una serie che parla di abusi, distinzioni per razza e classi sociali e dei compromessi che si devono accettare per competere in qesto campo.
A Spy Among Friends
Damian Lewis e Guy Pearce interpretano due agenti segreti dell’MI6 realmente esistiti e protagonisti di uno degli eventi più sconcertanti della Guerra Fredda. È il 1963 e l’agente Nicholas Elliott (Lewis) scopre il tradimento dell’agente e amico Kim Philby (Pearce), quest’ultimo infatti lavora in realtà per il KGB. La mini-serie è l’adattamento del best seller di Ben Macintyre ed esplora l’impatto di questo tradimento in seno all’establishment Britannico. Si concentra in particolare su ciò che è accaduto durante l’ultimo incontro tra Philby ed Elliott.
The Kingdom Exodus
Lars von Trier ritorna sugli schermi televisivi con la terza stagione di The Kingdom (1994), seguito poi da The Kingdom 2 (1997). La serie, intrisa di soprannaturale e dramma, si ambienta nuovamente nel reparto di neurochirurgia di un ospedale di Copenaghen. Qui il regista abbatte la barriera che divide attori e spettatori, infatti la terza stagione parla di una paziente sonnambula, fan dello show, che ricerca la verità sugli eventi dell’ospedale.
High School
Il punto di partenza di questa serie è il libro di memorie del duo musicale canadese, composto dalle gemelle Tegan e Sara Quin. Le memorie ripercorrono il periodo del liceo vissuto nel pieno dei primi anni ’90. All’epoca le due ragazze dovevano fare i conti con i drammi adolescenziali, accentuati dai pregiudizi sul mondo LGBT. High School racconta quindi i piaceri e i dolori della crescita, del trovare il proprio posto nel mondo e della ricerca della propria identità culturale e sessuale.
Self Portrait as a Coffee Pot
La serie assomiglia di più ad un documentario. L’artista Sudafricano William Kentridge, nel pieno del Lockdown in Sud Africa, decide di realizzare dei brevi cortometraggi in vari stili. Tra film, animazione, performance, collage e i suoi caratteristici disegni a carboncino, riflette sul processo creativo, sul valore dell’arte e sulla situazione culturale, politica e sociale del Sud Africa. I frammenti creati diventano autoritratti dell’artista che spesso dialoga con sè stesso.

BFI London Film Festival is not only films, but also TV series. Also this year the organization has reserved an exclusive space for the new TV series coming, with several premieres that already presage a rich program for fans. Here is the list selected by the BFI.
The English
Soon on Amazon Prime, this miniseries stars Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer. The story tells of the foundation of the United States as we know them today, then faces the period of the old West. In this context a rich English woman Cornelia Locke (Blunt) arrived in the United States in 1890 and thanks to her economic means she tries in every way to kill the man responsible for her son’s death. After several adventures he meets Eli Whipp (Spencer), a soldier discharged from the army who tries to return home.
Mammals
James Corden and Sally Hawkins portray a married couple, facing life as a couple with the classic challenges of long-term commitment. The series aims to investigate the behavior of couples, the exclusivity of the monogamous relationship and everything that follows. The result is a dramatic comedy that captivates the viewer and makes him reflect.
Exterior Night
A movie, then turned into a TV series that we already told you about. Marco Bellocchio, director able to convey all the drama of the historical events that have upset Italy, created this work. Divided into six episodes, it tells of the kidnapping and murder of Christian Democrat leader Aldo Moro in 1978. The series focuses on the political responsibilities of the institutions and the climate that prevailed in those tragic days. Fabrizio Gifuni plays Moro, while Toni Servillo lends his face to Pope Paul VI.
Señorita 89
It premiered only in the United States and Latin America in February 2022. It is a Mexican production starring Ilse Salas, Ximena Romo and Bárbara López. The story takes place in a finishing school, in which 32 girls try to improve themselves to become Miss Mexico. Here they are joined by a new graduate, very skeptical, who has the intention of revealing what is hidden behind this glossy world. It is a series of abuses, distinctions by race and social classes and compromises that must be made to compete in this field.
A Spy Among Friends
Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce play two MI6 secret agents who really existed and are the protagonists of one of the most disconcerting events of the Cold War. It is 1963 and the agent Nicholas Elliott (Lewis) discovers the betrayal of the agent and friend Kim Philby (Pearce), that actually works for the KGB. The mini-series is an adaptation of Ben Macintyre’s best seller and explores the impact of this betrayal within the British establishment. It focuses in particular on what happened during the last meeting between Philby and Elliott.
The Kingdom Exodus
Lars von Trier returned to television with the third season of The Kingdom (1994), followed by The Kingdom 2 (1997). The series, imbued with supernatural and drama, takes place again in the neurosurgery department of a hospital in Copenhagen. Here the director breaks down the barrier that divides actors and spectators, in fact the third season talks about a patient sleepwalker, a fan of the show, who searches for the truth about the events of the hospital.
High School
The starting point of this series is the memoir of the Canadian musical duo, composed by the twins Tegan and Sara Quin. The memories trace the period of high school lived in the middle of the early 90’s. At the time the two girls had to deal with the adolescent dramas, accentuated by prejudices on the LGBT world. High School then tells the pleasures and pains of growth, to find one’s place in the world and to seek one’s own cultural and sexual identity.
Self Portrait as a Coffee Pot
The series is more like a documentary. The South African artist William Kentridge, in the middle of Lockdown in South Africa, decided to make short films in various styles. Between films, animation, performances, collages and his characteristic charcoal drawings, he reflects on the creative process, the value of art and the cultural, political and social situation of South Africa. The fragments created become self-portraits of the artist who often dialogues with himself.
