Dopo le dimissioni di Kwasi Kwarteng, a fronte delle polemiche sul crollo dei mercati per la sua manovra di Bilancio, il nuovo Cancelliere dello Scacchiere è Jeremy Hunt, ma chi è?
Kwarteng si è dimesso. Ha specificato che “mi ha chiesto (Liz Truss ndr) di farmi da parte come suo Cancelliere e ho accettato“. Nel mentre il Primo Ministro Truss aveva già preso la decisione e ha dichiarato che il nuovo Cancelliere è Jeremy Hunt.
La causa del passo indietro è il caos economico-finanziario che è nato dopo l’annuncio della monovra di Kwarteng, il quale continua a difenderla avendo affermato che “la sua visione di ottimismo, crescita e cambiamento era giusta” e che “per troppo tempo questo Paese è stato perseguitato da bassi tassi di crescita e da una tassazione elevata, che deve cambiare se questo Paese vuole avere successo“.
Downing Street ha quindi annunciato che Jeremy Hunt, ex Segretario alla Salute, importante sostenitore di Rishi Sunak durante la campagna per la leadership del Conservative Party, è il nuovo Cancelliere.
Hunt è uno dei Conservatori di spicco vista la sua enorme esperienza in ruoli chiave dei precedenti Governi e vista la sua ottima reputazione all’interno del Partito. Parlamentare dal 2005 nel Collegio di South West Surrey, ha ricoperto il ruolo di Segretario per la Cultura, i Media, lo Sport e i Giochi Olimpici nel Governo Cameron dal 2010 al 2012. Successivamente sia per Cameron che a seguire per May è stato Segretario per la Salute dal 2012 al 2018, per poi servire per un anno, fino al 2019, come Segretario per gli Affari Esteri.
Altro aspetto da considerare è che Hunt può fare da anello di congiunzione tra Liz Truss e l’opposizione interna al Partito, che, secondo molti, potrebbe essere soddisfatta nel vedere un membro di spicco del Partito occupare una casella fondamentale all’interno del Governo Truss.

UK, GOVERNMENT: WHO’S NEW CHANCELLOR JEREMY HUNT
After the resignation of Kwasi Kwarteng, in the face of the controversy over the collapse of the markets for his budget, the new Chancellor is Jeremy Hunt, but who is he?
Kwarteng resigned. He specified that “she asked me (Liz Truss) to step aside as his Chancellor and I accepted“. In the meantime Prime Minister Truss had already made the decision and declared that the new Chancellor is Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt is one of the leading Conservatives given his vast experience in key roles in previous Governments and his reputation within the Party. Since 2005 he’s a MP elected in South West Surrey, he has served as Secretary for Culture, Media, Sport and the Olympic Games in the Cameron Government from 2010 to 2012. He then served both for Cameron and later for May as Secretary for Health from 2012 to 2018, then he served for a year, until 2019, as Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
Another aspect to consider is that Hunt can act as a link between Liz Truss and the opposition within the Party, which, according to many, could be satisfied in seeing a prominent member of the Party occupy a key box within the Truss Government.
