LONDONAISE Press – Founded in 2015, the Westminster Italian Conservatives – a political support group based in Westminster Ebury Street, aims to promote the Conservative Party in the Italian community in Great Britain. Is not to be confused with the British Italian Conservatives.
The President Stefania Signorelli and the Founder and Honorary President Chris Vinante Giovannini were invited by one of the Prime Minister’s Special Advisors to 10 Downing Street to reconnect the relations now weakened by the recent two years of the pandemic.
The visit – the Group reports in a note – was also an occasion for a fleeting and unexpected meeting with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak MP, in the corridor leading to the historic “Cabinet Room”. Afterwards, during the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Special Advisor remembered the Group’s commitment over the past 7 years, especially for its efforts with various events in support of the campaigns of the Conservative Party, in which, among others, we have always tried to emphasize the “Made in Italy”.
In particular, the work carried out with the Minister for the Environment and one of the “Main Patrons” of the Italian Conservative Group, Lord Zac Goldsmith, were mentioned, not only because the Group’s beginnings coincided with his candidacy for Mayor of London in 2015, but also for the deep esteem and mutual respect that still characterize the relationships with him; the various events with Jeremy Hunt MP, Minister of Health at the time, with the Minister for Aviation, Robert Courts MP, (who later also became one of the “Main Patrons”) up to the numerous electoral campaign sessions which also included sessions of “canvassing” alongside the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab MP, and numerous other members of the Government.
During the meeting, also mentioned was the commitment of the Group in mediating in between the organization in support of the rights of European citizens “the 3 Million” led by our friends (even if not politically aligned), Nicolas Hatton and Dimitri Scarlato and the May government at the time in office.
Zac Goldsmith and Westminster Member of Parliament Nickie Aiken MP in fact met Hatton and Scarlato several times in 2018 and, following those meetings, they undertook to report to the Prime Minister the concerns and fears of European citizens residing in the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, in 2019, some representatives of the Italian Westminster Group met Boris Johnson MP in Zac Goldsmith’s office in Richmond; a meeting during which the Prime Minister publicly declared his intention to resolve the issue of “Settled Status” from the first day of his re-election. On the same topic, informal meetings of the Group also took place with the then always available Minister of the Interior Amber Rudd MP and Brandon Lewis MP, during which the complexity of the forms for obtaining British residency and citizenship were also brought to attention. The Group pointed out, on several occasions, to both Ministers that most of the data requested in the very long forms is already available for them at the HM Revenue & Customs office. Therefore, a simple link between the Home Office and the HM Revenue & Customs would have saved everyone’s time and resources, an action which then materialized.
During the meeting with the Special Advisor, it was also remembered when the former Honorary President of the Group, Alberto Costa MP, was introduced to the representatives of “the 3 Million”, Hutton and Scarlato; a meeting which gave rise to his support for their campaign and which led Costa to undertake an intense campaign within the government in support of the rights of Europeans residing in the United Kingdom that the then May government was hesitant to confirm. Work for which the Group still thanks its former Honorary President.
The meeting therefore focused on more topical issues: in particular, explains the Group, some of the concerns arising from some negative aspects deriving from Brexit were highlighted with emphasis, especially for some sectors most affected such as hospitality, in which, among other things, many Italians work. Sectors that have also been heavily affected by the pandemic and the various lockdowns in the last two years.
In full synergy, some future activities have been proposed by both sides, especially to give voice to these issues. In this regard, the President of the Group, Stefania Signorelli proposed some ideas and gave her complete availability to continue the dialogue with the Government and to increase communications with that part of the Italian community which the Group has been able to reach in recent years.
Singorelli and Vinante Giovannini therefore wished to be able to do better in this sense, also as regards the highlighting of Italian talents present in the United Kingdom.
Finally, the Prime Minister’s Special Adviser congratulated the Group’s efforts in supporting the latest campaign for the Mayor of London, Shaun Bailey, made difficult by the pandemic. The Conservative’s candidate was also a guest at the last Annual Assembly of the Group, during which Marco Longhi MP, member of the British Parliament born and living in Italy for 19 years, was also unanimously voted the new “Chairman” of the Group.

Westminster Italian Conservatives al no.10 di Downing Street
LONDRAAISE Press – Fondato nel 2015, il Westminster Italian Conservatives – un gruppo di supporto politico con sede a Westminster Ebury Street, mira a promuovere il Partito Conservatore nella comunità italiana in Gran Bretagna. Non è da confondere con i conservatori italiani britannici.
La Presidente Stefania Signorelli e il Fondatore e Presidente Onorario Chris Vinante Giovannini sono stati invitati da uno dei Consiglieri Speciali del Presidente del Consiglio al 10 di Downing Street per riallacciare i rapporti ormai indeboliti dagli ultimi due anni di pandemia.
La visita – riporta il Gruppo in una nota – è stata anche occasione per un fugace e inaspettato incontro con il Primo Ministro Boris Johnson e il Cancelliere Rishi Sunak, nel corridoio che porta alla storica “Cabinet Room”. Successivamente, durante l’incontro, il Consigliere speciale del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri ha ricordato l’impegno del Gruppo negli ultimi 7 anni, soprattutto per il suo impegno con vari eventi a sostegno delle campagne del Partito Conservatore, in cui, tra l’altro, abbiamo sempre cercato di sottolineare il “Made in Italy”.
In particolare sono stati citati il lavoro svolto con il Ministro dell’Ambiente e uno dei “Principali Patrons” del Gruppo Conservatore Italiano, Lord Zac Goldsmith, non solo perché gli esordi del Gruppo hanno coinciso con la sua candidatura a Sindaco di Londra nel 2015 , ma anche per la profonda stima e rispetto reciproco che ancora caratterizzano i rapporti con lui; i vari eventi con Jeremy Hunt MP, allora Ministro della Salute, con il Ministro dell’Aviazione, Robert Courts MP, (divenuto poi anche uno dei “Main Patrons”) fino alle numerose sessioni di campagna elettorale che prevedevano anche sessioni di “avanzamento” al fianco del Primo Ministro, del Vice Primo Ministro Dominic Raab MP, e di numerosi altri membri del Governo.
Durante l’incontro è stato anche ricordato l’impegno del Gruppo nel mediare tra l’organizzazione a sostegno dei diritti dei cittadini europei “The 3 Milion” guidata dai nostri amici (anche se non politicamente allineati), Nicolas Hatton e Dimitri Scarlato e il governo al momento in carica.
Zac Goldsmith e il parlamentare di Westminster Nickie Aiken MP hanno infatti incontrato più volte Hatton e Scarlato nel 2018 e, a seguito di quegli incontri, si sono impegnati a riferire al Primo Ministro le preoccupazioni e le paure dei cittadini europei residenti nel Regno Unito.
Inoltre, nel 2019, alcuni rappresentanti dell’Italian Westminster Group hanno incontrato Boris Johnson MP nell’ufficio di Zac Goldsmith a Richmond; una riunione durante la quale il Primo Ministro ha dichiarato pubblicamente la sua intenzione di risolvere la questione dello “Stato Settled” sin dal primo giorno della sua rielezione. Sullo stesso argomento si sono svolti anche incontri informali del Gruppo con l’allora sempre disponibile ministro dell’Interno Amber Rudd MP e Brandon Lewis MP, durante i quali è stata anche portata all’attenzione la complessità delle forme per ottenere la residenza e la cittadinanza britannica. Il Gruppo ha più volte sottolineato ad entrambi i Ministri che la maggior parte dei dati richiesti nei lunghissimi moduli è già per loro disponibile presso l’HM Revenue & Customs Office. Pertanto, un semplice collegamento tra il Ministero dell’Interno e l’HM Revenue & Customs avrebbe fatto risparmiare tempo e risorse a tutti, un’azione che poi si è concretizzata.
Nel corso dell’incontro con il Consigliere Speciale, è stato anche ricordato quando l’ex Presidente Onorario del Gruppo, Alberto Costa MP, è stato presentato ai rappresentanti di “Three Milion”, Hutton e Scarlato; un incontro che diede origine al suo sostegno alla loro campagna e che portò Costa a intraprendere un’intensa campagna all’interno del governo a sostegno dei diritti degli europei residenti nel Regno Unito che l’allora governo di maggio esitava a confermare. Opera per la quale il Gruppo ringrazia ancora l’ex Presidente Onorario.
L’incontro si è quindi concentrato su temi più attuali: in particolare, spiega il Gruppo, sono state evidenziate con enfasi alcune delle preoccupazioni derivanti da alcuni aspetti negativi derivanti dalla Brexit, soprattutto per alcuni settori maggiormente colpiti come quello dell’ospitalità, in cui, tra l’altro, molti italiani lavorano. Settori che negli ultimi due anni sono stati pesantemente colpiti anche dalla pandemia e dai vari lockdown.
In piena sinergia, alcune attività future sono state proposte da entrambe le parti, soprattutto per dare voce a questi temi. Al riguardo, la Presidente del Gruppo, Stefania Signorelli, ha proposto alcune idee e ha dato la sua piena disponibilità a proseguire il dialogo con il Governo e ad aumentare la comunicazione con quella parte della comunità italiana che il Gruppo ha saputo raggiungere in questi anni.
Singorelli e Vinante Giovannini hanno quindi voluto poter fare meglio in questo senso, anche per quanto riguarda la valorizzazione dei talenti italiani presenti nel Regno Unito.
Infine, il Consigliere speciale del Primo Ministro si è congratulato con gli sforzi del Gruppo nel sostenere l’ultima campagna per il sindaco di Londra, Shaun Bailey, resa difficile dalla pandemia. Il candidato del conservatore è stato anche ospite dell’ultima Assemblea Annuale del Gruppo, durante la quale il deputato Marco Longhi, deputato britannico nato e residente in Italia da 19 anni, è stato anche eletto all’unanimità il nuovo “Chairman” del Gruppo.
Il tutto con il patrocinio di Robert Courts MP, Ministro dell’Aviazione.
