Dopo un’assenza di ben nove anni dai palchi londinesi, e dopo una stagione che è durata dodici anni al teatro Dominion, è tornato per un breve tour di sole 12 settimane il musical “We Will Rock You”, presso il Coliseum Theatre.
Il musical, scritto da Ben Elton, racconta la storia di un gruppo di bohémien che lottano per ripristinare il libero scambio di pensiero, moda e musica dal vivo, in un futuro lontano dove tutti vestono, pensano e agiscono allo stesso modo.

Ovviamente dalla prima versione, i dialoghi sono stati modificati per aggiungere referenze attuali come l’intelligenza artificiale, l’uso smodato degli smartphone, oltre a menzionare cantanti e canzoni che nella prima stesura del copione, ben vent’anni fa, non esistevano proprio.
L’inaugurazione del musical, avvenuta il 2 Giugno 2023, ha visto un teatro completamente esaurito, con il pubblico che batteva le mani a tempo, cantando le canzoni, ben 24, del repertorio dei Queen.
Un momento che ha strappato una valanga di applausi è stato quando la statua del compianto Freddie Mercury, che prima campeggiava sopra l’ingresso del teatro Dominion, e’ stata portata in scena.

Il cast era gremito di nomi eccellenti nel mondo teatrale come Brenda Edwards, che ha recitato in Chicago, Sister Act, Hairspray, nella parte di Killer Queen; Lee Mead, visto anche in Wicked, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, nella parte di Khashoggi e lo scrittore e regista Ben Elton nella parte di Rebel Leader, cimentandosi per la prima volta come attore e cantante, con risultati eccellenti.
Fra il pubblico è stato notato Brian May, un po’ nell’ombra, seduto vicino alla console del tecnico audio, che alla fine del primo atto, prima che le luci si accendessero in sala, si è eclissato in una stanza privata del teatro.
Canzoni come “We Are The Champions”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Radio Ga Ga” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”, oltre a “We Will Rock You”, hanno entusiasmato il pubblico ed alla fine della performance c’è stata una standing ovation che ha concluso una serata incredibile.
Il musical sarà in scena fino al 26 Agosto 2023.

After a nine-year absence from the London stage and a twelve-year season at the Dominion Theatre, the musical We Will Rock You is back for a short 12-week tour at the Coliseum Theatre.
The musical, written by Ben Elton, tells the story of a group of bohemians fighting to restore the free exchange of thought and fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts alike.

Obviously from the first version, the dialogues have been modified to add current references such as artificial intelligence, the immoderate use of smartphones, as well as mentioning singers and songs that did not exist at all in the first draft of the script twenty years ago.
The inauguration of the musical on 2 June 2023 saw a completely sold out theatre, with the audience clapping in time, singing, with 24 songs from Queen’s repertoire in the show. A moment that drew an avalanche of applause was when the statue of the late Freddie Mercury, which previously stood above the entrance to the Dominion Theatre, was brought onto the stage.
The cast was filled with top names in the theatre world such as Brenda Edwards, who starred in Chicago, Sister Act, Hairspray, as the Killer Queen, Lee Mead, also seen in Wicked, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as Khashoggi and writer-director Ben Elton as Rebel Leader, making his debut as an actor and singer, with excellent results.

Among the audience Brian May was noticed, sitting somewhat in the shadows near the audio engineer’s console, who at the end of the first act, before the lights went on in the hall, eclipsed himself in a private room of the theatre.
Songs like We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga and Don’t Stop Me Now, as well as We Will Rock You wowed the audience and at the end of the performance there was a standing ovation which concluded an incredible evening.
The musical will be on stage until August 26, 2023.
